Laptop screen replacement cost: what you'll pay and when it's worth it
A cracked or flickering laptop screen usually costs $150–320 to replace. Here is what decides the price, and how to tell if it's really the screen.
A cracked screen is one of the most common repairs we do, and one of the most worth doing. It's a fixed part, it usually goes in the same day if the screen is in stock, and the rest of the laptop carries on as before.
Typical price: $150–320
The screen itself is most of the cost, and it varies a lot by model:
| Common 14–15 inch laptops | From $150 |
|---|---|
| Touchscreens and thin premium modelsThe glass and the panel are often one part | Up to $320 |
| MacBooksMany need the whole lid assembly | Quoted per model |
We quote the actual part for your exact model before ordering, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.
Is it really the screen?
Not every display problem is a broken screen. Before you pay for one, check:
- Cracks, ink-like blotches or coloured lines that stay put when you move the window: almost always the screen.
- Flickering that changes when you open and close the lid: often the cable in the hinge, which can be cheaper than a screen.
- A black screen but the laptop is on (lights, fan noise): plug it into a TV with an HDMI cable. If a picture appears there, the problem is the screen or its cable, not the whole laptop.
- Very dim picture: can be a backlight fault rather than the panel.
This is exactly what the free diagnosis is for: we find out which part has failed before quoting, so you're not paying for a screen you didn't need.
When it isn't worth it
If the laptop is old, slow and the screen is the third thing to go, a new screen may not be the best use of the money. We will tell you that before ordering anything. On the other hand, a $200 screen on a laptop that is otherwise fine is far cheaper than replacing it, and you keep all your programs and files exactly as they are.
