Long houses are harder to cover than tall ones

Patterson Lakes has a housing style you do not see much elsewhere in our area: large single-level homes, often stretched along a canal frontage, with the living areas at one end and bedrooms or a study at the other. Add double brick, and sometimes a boat shed or a garage that someone works from, and you have a coverage problem that a single router simply cannot solve.

A double-storey house puts distance vertically, and signal travels between floors reasonably well. A long single-level house puts distance horizontally through every internal wall in the building, which is much harder. It is the reason we do proportionally more mesh work here than anywhere except Clyde North.

Getting coverage to the far end

The approach depends on the building. Where there is existing cabling — and a lot of these homes have it, even if nobody has used it in years — a wired access point at the far end is the best result by a distance. Where there is not, a mesh with a well-placed middle node usually does it.

• We measure signal at the far rooms before recommending anything, rather than working from a floor plan
• Existing wall cabling is checked first, because using it costs you less than adding hardware
• Outbuildings and boat sheds are treated as their own problem — they usually need their own node

Most homes here land in the $150–250 range for a coverage fix. If the answer turns out to be simply moving your existing router four metres, we will tell you that and charge you for the visit rather than selling you a mesh.

Macs, and the storage question

There are more Macs per household here than in most of our area, and the most common Mac job is not a repair at all — it is storage. A MacBook or iMac that has filled its drive slows down noticeably, and the machine feels old when it is really just full.

On older iMacs the internal drive can often be replaced or upgraded, which transforms a machine that felt finished. On recent MacBooks the storage is soldered to the board and cannot be changed at any price, so the honest answer is external storage or clearing space rather than a repair. We will tell you which of those your machine is before you spend anything.

Software faults, macOS reinstalls, storage upgrades where the hardware allows, data recovery, migration to a new machine, and diagnosis of anything so you know what you are dealing with.

We do not

Repairs needing Apple-only parts or board-level work on recent models. We will tell you that up front rather than taking the machine and handing it back a week later.

Waterfront properties and humidity

Homes near the water run damper than inland ones, and computers left in garages, boat sheds and unheated studies feel it. We see more corroded contacts and more early drive failures in outbuildings here than in the main house. If a machine lives somewhere unheated, it is worth having the data backed up somewhere that does not.
