Berwick runs on laptops

More than anywhere else we cover, Berwick work is laptops rather than desktops. Between the home offices around the village, the students at the Berwick campus and the professional households in Beaconsfield and Harkaway, most of what we see is portable — and portable machines fail differently to ones that sit under a desk.

Laptops get dropped, get liquid in them, run hot because the vents are full of dust, and have batteries that swell after a few years. None of those are things a desktop does. It also means the two faults we are called to most here are a broken screen and a machine that will not start.

A laptop that will not boot is usually recoverable

The phrase "it just won't turn on" covers about five completely different faults, and the price varies enormously between them. Before assuming the worst it is worth knowing that the most expensive possibility — a failed motherboard — is also the least common.

No lights at all

Usually the charger or the power circuit. Cheapest outcome, and worth testing a known-good charger before you book anything.

Lights and fan, black screen

Often the screen or its cable rather than the computer. The machine may be running perfectly behind a dead panel.

Manufacturer logo, then a loop or error

Windows or the drive. Frequently repairable without losing anything, $80–180.

Clicking or grinding, then nothing

A failing mechanical drive. Stop using it immediately — every extra minute of power reduces what can be recovered.

The work-from-home machine that "needs replacing"

A pattern we see constantly in Berwick: someone working from home decides their four-year-old laptop is past it, because everything takes an age and it stalls on video calls. Very often the machine is fine and one component is not — an SSD that has filled up, or memory that was adequate for the machine's original job and is not adequate for a browser with thirty tabs plus Teams.

An SSD or memory upgrade is $150–280 and takes an afternoon. A new laptop of equivalent capability is several times that, plus a day of setting everything up again. We will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on — including when the answer genuinely is to replace it.

Students and the end-of-semester panic

The Berwick campus means we get a steady run of urgent student work, and it clusters at exactly the worst times: the fortnight before assignments are due. The two calls are always the same — a cracked screen after a fall, or a drive that has died with the only copy of a thesis on it.

2. That is not a backup by itself, but it means a dead laptop costs you a laptop rather than a semester
3. Check it is actually syncing occasionally, rather than assuming
