The warehouse coverage problem

Carrum Downs has one of the larger industrial estates in the south-east, and it generates a very specific kind of call: the office has perfect Wi-Fi and the warehouse has none. Someone is trying to run a scanner, a tablet or a stocktake app fifty metres away through a brick wall and a steel roller door, and it drops out constantly.

This is not a problem you can solve by buying a more powerful router. Radio signal does not go through steel, and the regulatory power limits mean the difference between a cheap router and an expensive one is much smaller than the marketing implies. What works is putting an access point where the coverage needs to be and cabling back to it.

• A wired access point in the warehouse itself rather than a stronger signal from the office
• Cable run properly, because powerline adapters are unreliable across separate circuits — and industrial sites usually have several
• The same network name throughout, so scanners hand over cleanly instead of clinging to the office signal
• Separate networks for stock devices and staff phones, so a busy lunchtime does not slow the scanners

Small industrial businesses and the single computer

A lot of businesses on the estate run on one office computer holding quotes, invoices and the customer list. It is often several years old, has never been backed up, and is the single point of failure for the entire operation. Nobody plans it that way; it just happens as the business grows around it.

We are not going to tell you to replace a machine that works. What we will do is make sure the data on it exists somewhere else, automatically, with versions you can go back to. That is $90–160 and it is the best money a small business spends on IT.

The residential side
