Two upgrades worth doing, and two that are not
An SSD and memory transform an older machine. A faster processor or a new graphics card usually do not. Here is how to tell what your machine actually needs.
People often ask us what to upgrade to make a computer faster, and the honest answer is that only two upgrades reliably matter on an ordinary machine — and one of them matters enormously more than the other three combined.
Worth doing: an SSD
If your computer still has a mechanical hard drive, this is not one option among several. It is the upgrade, and everything else is noise until it is done.
A mechanical drive has a physical head that moves across a spinning platter. An SSD has no moving parts and responds in a fraction of the time. Because so much of what a computer does is waiting for the drive, replacing it changes the character of the machine rather than nudging a benchmark.
- Start-up typically drops from two or three minutes to under twenty seconds
- Programs open as you click rather than after a pause
- The machine stops freezing when several things happen at once
- Battery life often improves, because there is no motor to spin
Worth doing: memory, if you are actually short
Memory is worth adding only if you are genuinely running out — and many people who think they are, are not.
Check first. Open Task Manager, go to Performance, and watch memory usage while you work normally. If it sits near capacity and the machine is swapping to disk, more memory will help. If it sits at 60%, adding more will change nothing at all.

- Genuinely limiting in 2026. Even ordinary browsing with several tabs will struggle. Upgrading is worthwhile.
- 8GB
- Fine for browsing, email, documents and streaming. Tight if you keep dozens of tabs open alongside video calls.
- 16GB
- Comfortable for essentially all home use, and plenty for most work use.
- 32GB and beyond
- Only for video editing, large datasets, or running virtual machines. Buying this for browsing is money wasted.
Memory upgrades usually run $80–180 depending on the machine and how much is already fitted. On many recent laptops the memory is soldered to the board and cannot be changed — we will tell you before you spend anything.
Usually not worth it: a faster processor
On a desktop it is sometimes technically possible. It is rarely sensible.
The processor is very seldom the bottleneck in ordinary use — the drive is. A faster processor on a mechanical drive produces a machine that waits just as long, slightly more efficiently. And the upgrade is constrained: the socket, the motherboard chipset and often the power supply all limit what will fit, so the realistic step up from a processor of the same generation is modest.
By the time you have bought a compatible processor, you are usually a good way toward a machine that is faster in every respect. On laptops the processor is soldered and the question does not arise.
Usually not worth it: a graphics card, unless you game
A dedicated graphics card makes a substantial difference to gaming, 3D work and video rendering. For browsing, email, documents, streaming and video calls it makes essentially none — those tasks are handled comfortably by the graphics built into the processor.
If someone has suggested a graphics card to fix a slow computer used for ordinary things, they have misdiagnosed it. The exception is genuine gaming, where it is the single most important component — a different conversation with different economics.
How to work out what your machine needs
Watch the machine while it is being slow, rather than guessing from its age.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Escape and click Performance
- Use the computer normally until it frustrates you
- Look at which of Disk, CPU and Memory is sitting near 100%
- That is your bottleneck; everything else is a distraction
Disk at 100% with a mechanical drive means an SSD. Memory near capacity means more memory. CPU pinned at 100% during ordinary browsing usually means something is wrong — malware, or a runaway process — rather than a machine that needs a faster processor.
When to stop upgrading and replace
We will say so when a machine is not worth further money, and the test is whether one repair makes it genuinely useful or is the first of several.
- A single fault on a sound machine — worth fixing
- A failing drive plus a swollen battery plus a cracked hinge — replace it
- 4GB of soldered memory on an older laptop — the ceiling is too low to be worth the work
- Any machine where the repair total approaches the price of a replacement — replace, and we will tell you so
